Share Your Zebra Magic

Written by: Amanda Henderson, March 24, 2016

Oakland Christian Church (DOC) of Oakland, Iowa hosted a benefit dinner and auction on March 19, 2016, and it was a great success! They met and exceeded their goal to raise funds for my extensive medical bills due to Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Many thanks are in order for the outpouring of auction items and the attendance and participation in the auction. The Maid Rite dinner was a hit serving more than 200 meals, and was provided by Oakland Manor complete with signs touting support for Amanda and EDS Awareness.

At the event, I shared the meaning behind the zebra stripes, the ‘Spoon Theory’, and excerpts from my own experiences over the last eleven years, in hopes of educating the attendees on EDS and rare disease to be able to ‘Share Zebra Magic’ with others. The local entertainment included great music from Marvin Clark, and emcee stylings by Frank Olmstead and Pastor Mark Macwhorter. Auctioneer Charlie Pierce had lots of help from Rick Osweiler and Mick Fay. Not to mention all the volunteers of every age from OCC and my family- their Spirit lead mission had a hugely positive impact on this Oakland family!
